Job description
Start here. Core Volunteers are the backbone of Health Matters Clinic—supporting outreach, events, and community-based care across all of our programs.

As a Core Volunteer, you can participate in a wide range of opportunities, including street medicine outreach, health fairs, wellness events, mental health programming, and community activations. This role gives you flexible access to get involved where you’re most interested while building experience across different areas of impact.

This is the entry point into HMC. Volunteers begin here, complete onboarding and training, and gain access to opportunities across all programs through the Volunteer Portal.

  • Community Engagement: Welcome participants, support activities, and create a positive, inclusive environment.
  • Event & Outreach Support: Assist with setup, breakdown, check-in, and program flow across different event types.
  • Resource Navigation: Help connect community members to services, information, and support.
  • Operations Support: Assist with logistics, supplies, and coordination across programs.
  • Growth Pathways: Explore different roles and move into specialized tracks (e.g., Street Medicine, Clinical, Outreach, Events).

Qualifications

  • Passion for community impact and health equity
  • Reliable, communicative, and willing to learn
  • Comfortable working in diverse community settings
  • 18+ (or high school student with approval where applicable)
  • Ability to attend onboarding and required trainings
  • No prior experience required—just commitment and follow-through

Other benefits

  • Impact that counts: Directly support community members across Los Angeles.
  • Training: Orientation, role-based training, and pathways into advanced roles.
  • Community: Join a mission-driven team; build connections and mentorship.
  • Proof of service: Track hours, receive letters of recommendation, and gain experience.
  • Growth: Priority access to specialized roles (Street Medicine, Clinical, Leadership tracks).

How it Works (Getting Started)

  • Apply: Submit your application through the Volunteer Portal
    → volunteer.healthmatters.clinic
  • Get Oriented: Complete the “Get to Know Us” + Core Volunteer orientation
  • Complete Training: Finish required trainings (HIPAA, safety, role-based modules)
  • Access the Portal: Unlock full access to opportunities and tools
  • Sign Up for Shifts: Browse and RSVP for events, outreach, and programs directly in the portal
  • Grow with Us: Take on more responsibility and move into specialized roles over time

Note: Volunteers do not provide unsupervised clinical care. Responsibilities vary based on training, role, and program assignment under HMC supervision.
