National PTSD Awareness Day: What You Should Know

Image Person

June 27 is Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) Awareness Day. Today is an opportunity to recognize people living with PTSD and learn more about what PTSD is.

Here are a few important things to know:

  • PTSD is a mental health condition that can happen after a person has gone through a traumatic event. Traumatic events can include physical assault, natural disasters, accidents, combat, or other distressing events.
  • Not everyone who experiences a traumatic event will develop PTSD, but anyone can develop PTSD at any age.
  • PTSD is treatable. Treatment, such as medication and counseling, can help improve symptoms and daily life.

Although only a health care provider can diagnose you with PTSD, you can use this self-screening questionnaire provided by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs to see if you have symptoms related to PTSD.

If you have concerns or questions about PTSD, talk with your healthcare provider. Seeking information and support is an important step toward getting care.
